Delta Govt Takes Proactive Measures to Tackle Flooding

By Salifu Faridat

The Delta State Government has initiated a large-scale dredging operation of major canals throughout the state as a proactive measure to ensure unobstructed water flow to existing rivers and mitigate flooding in vulnerable regions, including Warri, Uvwie, Udu, Sapele, Ughelli, and others.

This decision comes in response to predictions of heavy flooding, particularly in coastal states of Nigeria, made by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

Frank Omare, the Director-General of Special Duties at the Delta State Government House, while supervising the canal clearing operation on Friday, stated that the state government is resolute in taking the necessary steps to address the issue.

Governor Sheriff Oborivwori is firmly committed to eradicating flooding in the state and ensuring the well-being of its residents.

To further address the issue, the state government is set to demolish all illegal structures obstructing waterways across the state, regardless of the status of the individuals involved. Omare emphasized that no amount of pleading will deter the demolition exercise.

Omare also highlighted the efforts made by the government to desilt minor drainage in every street, but lamented that residents often use these drainage systems as dumping sites for refuse.

Consequently, the water is unable to flow into the major canals due to blockages caused by silt buildup.

Meanwhile, there have been reports that the bridge connecting Ese-Odo-Irele to Araromi, Ayeka, and Okitipupa communities in Okitipupa Local Government has been submerged by floodwaters.

The concrete embankment, constructed during Dr. Olusegun Agagu’s administration, remains the only land route linking these regions. As a result, many travelers are stranded, with some resorting to risky canoe crossings.

In light of this situation, Chief Olafusi Olaluwoye, a resident and community leader, has appealed to the state government to revisit the embankment contract and extend the construction of the Araromi Ayeka Bridge to the terminal end at Ode Irele. Such action would alleviate the hardships faced by people in the area and improve mobility.

The Delta State Government’s commitment to dredging canals and addressing the issues surrounding flooding demonstrates its determination to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens.

With ongoing efforts and timely interventions, the state aims to make flooding a thing of the past, enhancing the resilience of vulnerable communities and protecting lives and property.

Collaborative efforts between the government and local communities will be crucial to achieving sustainable solutions and creating a safer environment for all residents of Delta State.
