Delta Govt Confirms Water Pollution in Ukwu-Nzu Community, says Investigation Underway
By Queen Egbodo
The Delta State Government has acknowledged reports of water pollution in the Oko-Nzo community, Aniocha North Local Government Area, confirming the discoloration of the river.
Following concerns raised by residents about the change in the river’s color to brown, water samples have been collected and sent to a laboratory for testing.
The pollution is believed to be linked to coal mining operations along the riverbank by Mosla Energy Ltd.
However, the mining company denies involvement, attributing the discoloration to red soil used by NEWMAP three years ago for erosion control in the area.
The state commissioner for the environment, Mr. Jamani Ejero, assured residents that a thorough analysis of the water and sewage would be conducted to determine the cause of the discoloration.
He emphasized the importance of peaceful coexistence and commended the Okonzo community for not taking matters into their own hands.
Jamani stated, “Delta, the state agency for environmental protection under my ministry, has collected samples and will conduct laboratory tests on the water, and analysis will be carried out soon.”
He promised transparency in sharing the results and invited the community and coal mining companies to a meeting once the findings are revealed.
The public has applauded the state government for taking prompt action to investigate and address the pollution issue in the Ukwu-Nzu community.
