The Federal Government has approved a N3.8 billion contract for the construction of a 2-megawatt solar mini-grid at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Kano State.

The Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, disclosed this in Abuja while receiving the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Musa Yakasai.

He said the project, awarded by the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, is expected to commence soon and be completed within three months.

Abdullahi explained that the initiative is part of the Federal Government’s broader “Renewed Hope” solarisation programme aimed at improving electricity supply across the country, particularly in hospitals, tertiary institutions, and rural communities.

He also noted that President Bola Tinubu had earlier approved the launch of a four-megawatt solar project at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital following reports that two patients died due to power outages.

In addition, Abdullahi revealed that after facilitating the installation of 200 streetlights at the university, another 200 units would soon be delivered to further enhance security and improve nighttime study
conditions.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor commended the Energy Commission boss for his support, especially in strengthening power infrastructure within the institution.

He called for sustained collaboration in renewable energy development, including the establishment of a central energy laboratory, deployment of energy management tools, and training programmes.
