Dangote cement scores high rating on climate action, sustainable environment

By Abbas Nazil

Dangote Cement Plc has received improved ratings in its environmental disclosures, achieving a ‘B’ score in both climate change and water security, according to the recently released 2024 CDP results.

The CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project) is the world’s most extensive database on environmental action, enabling investors, companies, and governments to make informed sustainability decisions.

Dangote Cement has voluntarily been disclosing its environmental practices through CDP since 2018, reinforcing its commitment to transparency and sustainability.

The company’s latest results mark a significant improvement, particularly in water security, where its previous ‘C’ rating was upgraded to ‘B.’

This progress aligns with Dangote Cement’s broader sustainability strategy, aimed at reducing its carbon footprint and promoting environmental responsibility across its operations.

Similarly, the company maintained a ‘B’ score in climate change, reflecting its commitment to mitigating climate risks and adopting more sustainable practices.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Cement, Arvind Pathak, emphasized the company’s leadership in environmental transparency across Africa.

He noted that Dangote Cement is among the few businesses in six African states and regions actively disclosing through the CDP.

He attributed the improved ratings to the company’s ongoing initiatives to accelerate climate action and enhance sustainability within its value chain.

The Head of Sustainability at Dangote Cement, Dr. Igazeuma Okoroba, expressed appreciation to stakeholders who have aligned with the company’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy.

She highlighted that the improved CDP score is evidence of the company’s efforts to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility.

According to her, the company remains committed to not just disclosing its sustainability efforts but also implementing tangible actions that drive meaningful environmental impact.

Dangote Cement has been advancing its decarbonisation agenda through various initiatives, including improving energy efficiency, integrating supplementary cement materials, adopting carbon offsets, and implementing sustainable manufacturing practices.

These strategies are crucial in the company’s pursuit of long-term environmental sustainability and its broader goal of aligning with global climate action efforts.

As sub-Saharan Africa’s largest cement producer, Dangote Cement operates an installed capacity of 45.6 million tonnes per annum across ten African countries.

Its fully integrated “quarry-to-customer” business model encompasses cement manufacturing, sales, and distribution, ensuring efficiency across its operations.

The company remains committed to achieving its decarbonisation targets, reinforcing its role as a sustainability-driven industry leader in Africa.
