CSOs demand climate justice, finance commitment at COP29

By Faridat Salifu

The Climate and Sustainable Development Network (CSDevNet) is set to launch the “Keep Your Promise Campaign” in Lokoja, Kogi State, as part of efforts to highlight the urgent need for global action on climate change ahead of the COP29 summit in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Scheduled for October 25, 2024, the campaign will focus on the flood-prone areas of Ganaja, where communities continue to grapple with the severe impact of recurring floods linked to climate change.

CSDevNet, a coalition comprising over 300 organizations dedicated to promoting climate-resilient and equitable development across Nigeria, aims to use the campaign to draw attention to the disproportionate effects of climate change on Africa, a continent responsible for only a fraction of global emissions. The event will serve as a platform to amplify the demands for climate justice and for developed nations to fulfil their financial commitments to vulnerable regions.

Steve Abuh Monday, the National Network Coordinator of CSDevNet, outlined the significance of the campaign in a statement issued on Thursday. “As we approach COP29, the ‘Keep Your Promise Campaign’ calls on global leaders to honour their climate pledges. Kogi State, which has been repeatedly devastated by flooding, exemplifies the urgent need for these commitments to be translated into action,” he said.

The campaign will feature an awareness march, interviews with affected communities, and press briefings to emphasize the local consequences of climate inaction.

Organizers are urging wide public participation, as the event seeks to send a strong message to international leaders about the necessity of climate finance and the responsibility to protect vulnerable populations.

As the world prepares for the upcoming climate negotiations, CSDevNet’s campaign underscores the critical need for accountability and immediate interventions to mitigate the growing threats posed by climate change in Africa
