Crying for Climate Change Council
On November 18, 2021, President Muhammadu Buhari signed into law the Climate Change Act (2021). The law came into effect barely a week after the global Conference of Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP26) held at Glasgow, Scotland.
Expectedly, the President was applauded by stakeholders who felt, righty, that with the climate change law, the coast has been cleared for Nigeria to activate her commitment to environmental sustainability in line with the UN targets on zero carbon emission.
As government policy on Climate Change needs to be driven by dedicated citizens, the laws provides for a National Council on Climate Change which will be responsible for implementation of provisions of the new on Climate Change mitigation, adaptation and, perhaps, financing.
Already, the deadline for accomplishment of the targets is fast approaching. We urge the President to inaugurate the Council without further delay. As a big brother to other African countries, Nigeria must show leadership and exemplary conduct, not only at the level of continental advocacy but also at the comity of nations worldwide. It bears no reiterating that the challenges of flood, air and water pollution, erosion, biodiversity, desertification, h, open defecation, and carbon emissions, among others, are staring the nation in the face.
