Cross River: NGO distributes 570 bags fertiliser, tools to vegetable farmers

A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Rise and Thrive Humanitarian Foundation, on Monday distributed over 570 five kilogrammes bags of fertiliser to vegetable farmers in  Calabar-South Local Government Area.

The Director of the foundation, Mrs Cleo Adoga, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the outreach was specifically for female vegetable farmers in the Anantigha area of the council.

She said that the outreach, which had the theme, “A Blessing to Humanity” was God’s instructions to her to help women and children.

Adoga added that apart from distributing fertiliser and farm tools to the women, the group took their data to enable them follow-up and further assist the women.

“When we visited some time ago, we asked the women what they wanted and they said they needed fertiliser to help their crops blossom during the dry season farming.

“That is how we came up with the idea of distributing fertiliser and farm tools to all the women, irrespective of state, ethnic group or political affiliation.

“We expect that the women will be able to pay this little act of kindness forward, because I am sure they will also meet people in need,” she said.

According to Adoga, what she has done is like a calling and she is satisfied just by putting smiles on the faces of the women.

She assured the women that regardless of present challenges in the world, they are not forgotten.

The beneficiaries came out in their numbers singing and dancing to appreciate the NGO  for the outreach.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Veronica Kamado, told NAN that it was tough for farmers during the dry season and that the price of fertiliser was usually beyond their reach.

Kamado thanked the foundation for its kind gesture, noting that the fertiliser would boost their farming and ensure a better harvest.

Another beneficiary, Mrs Oku Offiong, said the foundation had done well and appealed to other well-meaning Nigerians to emulate the gesture and assist the needy in the society.

Offiong added that the initiative would encourage the women farmers to improve in their farm work and enhance their harvest.
