By Faridat Salifu

The Cross River Cocoa Processing Factory, Ikom may soon see a revived.

The Minister of State for Industry, Trade, and Investment, Sen. John Uwan-Enoh, who announced this recently, noted the factory’s potential to create 5,000 jobs and contribute approximately $6.8 million annually to Nigeria’s economy.

He spoke while inspecting the facility, expressing the need for modern cocoa processing to replace traditional production methods.

The factory, initiated in 2017 by former Governor Ben Ayade with a budget of N7 billion, was virtually completed by late 2019 but has yet to begin operations.

Although it was concessioned to AA Universal in 2022, it remains non-functional.

Uwan-Enoh pointed out the significance of cocoa production in Cross River, particularly in Ikom, Etung, and Boki, where cocoa farming is a cultural cornerstone.

He criticized the region’s reliance on raw cocoa exports, noting the lack of a processing facility as a significant barrier to economic growth.

The minister urged stakeholders to prioritize the establishment of functional processing plants to enhance value and profits for farmers.

He announced plans for a stakeholders’ session focused on cocoa processing, expressing his commitment to returning to the area to witness the factory’s operational success.

Chris Agara, Chairman of AA Universal, shared his optimism for the factory’s revival, asserting that it could generate significant employment and revenue.

He also highlighted plans for better produce handling and technological advancements to improve cocoa traceability and address issues like child labor.

Cocoa farmer Oputa Ayuk stressed the importance of competitive pricing for the factory’s success, warning that farmers might sell to exporters offering better deals if prices are not favorable.
