Concerns Mount in Delta Community Over Ocean Surge Impact on Oil Flow

By Grace Samuel

Tisun Community, situated in the Warri North local government area, is raising alarm over the escalating ocean levels that pose a potential threat to the seamless flow of oil and gas from the community come the new year.

Expressing discontent, the community places blame on the federal and state governments, as well as Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), accusing them of neglecting crucial development needs.

David Odeli, the Chairman of the Tisun Community Management Council, emphasizes that the community teeters on the brink of erosion due to the combined impact of ocean surges and the exploitation of crude oil by CNL.

Odeli issues a stark warning that starting from January 1, 2024, the federal government should anticipate a significant disruption in oil and gas production from the swamp operations in Warri North LGA.

Furthermore, he underscores the years-long neglect of the community’s basic amenities, leading to environmental devastation and widespread impoverishment.

“As a leader in the Tisun community, I am acutely aware of the high expectations placed upon me. CNL has failed to fulfill the annual benefits typically accorded to the people of Itsekiri host communities, including the social benefits from the Itsekiri Regional Development Committee (IRDC), despite its approval by the Committee Engagement Management Board (CEMB),” states Odeli.

A critical examination of the agencies responsible for the development of these communities, from the state to the federal level, reveals a lack of connection or concerted efforts to uplift the oil and gas-bearing communities.

Odeli laments the souring of the previous agreement and relationship with CNL, highlighting the absence of development initiatives for the affected communities.
