The Waste Pickers Association of Nigeria (WAPAN) has joined forces with Coca-Cola Nigeria to extend support to waste pickers at the Idu dumpsite in Abuja. The collaborative event, which occurred on Monday, saw Comrade Salisu Ali Yarima, President of WAPAN, expressing gratitude to the Coca-Cola Foundation for their generous contribution.
Coca-Cola’s support included 100 sets of waste picker jumpsuit uniforms, 100 cartons of Coca-Cola drinks, 80 bags of rice (5kg each), and 30 jumbo bags. Yarima highlighted WAPAN’s commitment to transparency in distributing these essential items to its members and communities.
Representatives from Coca-Cola, including Mohammed Aminu (Corporate Affairs and Community Partnership Manager, North) and Mrs. Olajumoke Bamigbola (Public & Regulatory Affairs Manager, Nigerian Bottling Company plc), reiterated the company’s appreciation for waste pickers and pledged continued support to empower them for a cleaner environment.
The ceremonial presentation of the waste picker jumpsuits and the equitable distribution of the remaining items showcased the thoughtful and collaborative approach of the partnership.
The WAPAN Secretary shared proactive plans with a naturenews correspondent about establishing a Waste Academy for comprehensive waste management training. Additionally, WAPAN has implemented a system for registering waste pickers, issuing ID cards, and providing unique color-coded uniforms linked to specific zones, promoting professionalism and safety within the waste management sector.
In conclusion, the partnership between WAPAN and Coca-Cola signifies a promising collaboration committed to uplifting waste pickers, fostering environmental stewardship, and promoting sustainable practices for a cleaner city.
