Climate Change: Police To Plant Trees Across Nigeria in 2024

By Obiabin Onukwugha
Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has stated that the Force will embark on tree planting in all its commands and formations as a means of contributing to the fight against climate change next year.
The IGP also stated that the Police will launch a green initiative as part of its emission reduction program.
He said the initiative aside tree planting will also include, use of CNG Police patrol vans, continuous campaign for renewable energy initiatives in Nigeria, and a strategic approach to light up communities and police stations to create well-lit and secure environments.
According to him, the move will contribute to a reduction in crime rates and foster community development across the country.
Egbetokun stated this while speaking on “The Nigeria Police Carbon Reduction Programme”, at the Nigeria Pavilion on the sidelines of the ongoing COP 28 in Dubai on Monday, December 4.
The Police boss highlighted the importance of the green initiative, pointing out that the program will not only help combat climate change, but also enhance the Police capacity in maintaining law and order in the country.
He further stated that the Green Initiative will serve as the police’s contribution to Nigeria’s global commitment to mitigating the effects of climate change.
“There is a growing concern about climate change around the world. What the police is doing is blazing the trail so that other government agencies will follow suit,” he added.
