Climate change: NiMet calls for urgent meeting

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has scheduled to hold its first virtual climate program of the year on Tuesday February 2021.

According to the statement obtained by NatureNews Africa, the program which is tagged ‘NiMet 2021 season climate prediction’ will be holding virtually by 10:00am on Tuesday.

According to NiMet, participants will be drawn to discuss extensively on climate change, challenges, forecast and predict a way forward.

Recall that NiMet released seasonal rainfall prediction, SRP early last year. In the report, the agency predicted the onset of the 2020 growing season to be near-normal to earlier-than-normal in most parts of the country. The earliest onset date was set at 24th of February, 2020 around coast of the south-south states while the latest date was anticipated to be around 22nd June, 2020 in the northernmost parts of the country.

The earliest cessation was expected in September 2020 around Katsina while the latest cessation was set at December 2020, around the Niger-Delta region.

The country was expected to record rainfall amounts from 400mm in the north to over 3000mm in the south.

The result in the climate change calls for the new prediction program to enable the agency predicts and tackles climate challenges.
