Climate Change: FG, Kogi Govt, Collaborate on Tree Planting Initiative

In a joint effort to combat the escalating impacts of climate change, the Federal Ministry of Environment partnered with the Kogi State Ministry of Environment and Ecological Management to launch a significant tree planting campaign along the banks of the River Niger at Ganaja Village.

Alhaji Tijjani Ahmed, the representative from the Federal Ministry of Environment, unveiled the theme of the initiative, “PHYTO – CONTROL AND PROTECTION OF EROSION AND MARGINAL LAND PROJECT IN KOGI STATE,” aimed at establishing a 4km river bank protection mechanism.

The primary objective focuses on ecological restoration of the shoreline and erosion control.

Highlighting the urgency of climate change mitigation, Ahmed emphasized the selection of Kogi State among nine states for the Tree Planting Exercise.

He underscored the directive to plant economic trees, emphasizing the benefits for both the state and local communities.

Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Management, Engr. Joseph Oluwasegun Stephen, applauded the initiative, acknowledging the pressing concerns surrounding climate change.

He emphasized the initiative’s potential to mitigate climate change impacts and create economic opportunities for the community and the state.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry Alhaji Jibrin Sheidu, stressed the need for immediate action against climate change.

He emphasized the importance of the tree planting exercise in mitigating climate change effects.

The Director Forestry, Mrs. Osho Ajayi, expressed gratitude for the Federal Government’s initiative, highlighting its importance.

She commended the Kogi State Government for its swift action in implementing the tree planting exercise.

Village Head Representative, Mr. AbdulMalik Muhammad, welcomed the project, emphasizing its potential impact on the community.

He assured the ministries of the community’s commitment to nurturing and maintaining the trees, urging further engagement of youths in the initiative.

Directors of the Kogi State Ministry of Environment and Ecological Management reiterated the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

They encouraged community youths to embrace sustainability practices and report any instances of deforestation or forest encroachment.
