The Project Coordinator for Kogi State’s ACReSAL, Barr Ladi Ahmed Jatto, has advocated for the adoption of climate-smart agriculture and land management practices to mitigate the impacts of climate change and land degradation, and enhance food security.
She was delivering a lecture on Thursday, April 10 at the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) on the three critical issues.
As the guest speaker at a special orientation program for the university’s newly established Faculty of Agriculture, Barr Jatto emphasized the interconnections between these pressing challenges and their detrimental impact on global food security.
She underscored the severe effects of climate change and land degradation, highlighting how they exacerbate food insecurity in Nigeria and across the African continent.
The ACReSAL official stressed the importance of a multi-pronged approach involving policy and governance reforms, stakeholder engagement, research and development, and improved water management.
Barr Jatto called on the pioneering students of the Faculty of Agriculture to rise to the occasion, reminding them that as future leaders in the field, they bear the responsibility of finding innovative ways to address the food security crisis.
The event featured remarks from the Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Olufunmilola Alabi, who encouraged the students to maintain focus and dedication in their studies, laying the foundation for future success.
Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, the Vice Chancellor of the university, expressed deep appreciation for Barr Jatto’s contribution to the program, acknowledging her valuable insights into the challenges of food security.
