Climate activist lauds President Tinubu’s Commitment to Clean Energy

By Faridat Salifu

Commendations poured in for President Bola Tinubu from Chief Sam Onuigbo, a prominent climate change activist, who lauded the president for propelling Nigeria towards a seamless transition to renewable energy.

In a recent interview in Abuja on Monday, January 29, 2024, Onuigbo underscored Tinubu’s pivotal role in signing the Electricity Act and leading Nigeria’s delegation to COP28, citing these actions as tangible proof of the president’s dedication to fostering a “green Nigeria.”

Onuigbo, a former member of the House of Representatives and the driving force behind the Climate Change Act, was recently honored with induction into Business Insider Global Leaders on Climate Change.

Emphasizing the critical need for the effective implementation of both the Climate Change Act and the Electricity Act, Onuigbo called on Tinubu to maintain unwavering commitment and steadfast leadership on climate change issues.

Furthermore, Onuigbo urged fellow African leaders to prioritize enhancing access to clean energy as a strategic approach to mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change.

Expressing deep concern over the staggering number of Africans, estimated at approximately 970 million, lacking access to renewable energy, Onuigbo emphasized the urgency for African leaders to invest in clean energy initiatives, stressing the importance of not relying solely on assistance from more advanced nations.

Despite the formidable challenges, Onuigbo voiced optimism about the strides made by African countries in combating the effects of climate change.

He highlighted the abundant green energy resources on the continent and urged leaders to harness these resources for developing a robust green energy infrastructure.

He emphasized that a continued reliance on fossil energy could leave African nations with an outdated market as the global trajectory shifts towards green energy.

In conclusion, Onuigbo underscored the imperative for African leaders to seize the opportunity presented by Africa’s vast green energy resources, urging them to accelerate the transition to clean energy.

This strategic move, he emphasized, would position the continent for a sustainable and green future in the global energy landscape.
