Mr. Chukwudi Enekwechi, Chairman of the Tinubu Media Volunteers (TMV), has praised the Federal Government’s Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Initiative, describing it as a game-changer that has attracted over N760 billion in private investments and generated thousands of jobs within just one year.
In a statement issued Friday, Enekwechi said the initiative, launched in response to the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, has already made a significant impact on Nigeria’s transportation sector and economic landscape.
“With the rise in petrol prices following the removal of fuel subsidy, the Federal Government acted swiftly by rolling out the CNG initiative, which has led to a more affordable transport system and drawn impressive private sector interest,” he said.
Enekwechi highlighted that the initiative has brought in approximately $491 million in foreign and local investments and created about 84,000 direct and indirect jobs, citing data from the Programme Director of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI), Mr. Michael Oluwagbemi.
He further noted that the number of CNG conversion centres nationwide has grown from seven to over 200 within a year, with plans to expand to 10,000 centres by the end of 2025.
TMV also lauded the provision of 405 CNG-powered buses, delivered as part of an agreement with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), aimed at easing transport challenges for Nigerian workers.
Calling the initiative “pragmatic and visionary,” Enekwechi said it holds strong potential to reduce unemployment, stimulate economic growth, and improve mobility across the country. He urged programme managers to ensure that the benefits are fully realized and extended to more communities.
TMV expressed optimism about the planned expansion of the CNG programme to 25 new sites across 15 states, reaffirming support for continued government efforts to scale up clean and affordable energy solutions.
