Cholera outbreak: UNICEF donates medical items to Jigawa govt

Following the cholera outbreak in Jigawa State, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund has donated some medication to the affected communities.

The disease which has more impact on children has killed about 30 persons from nine local governments in the state.

The Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Health, Dr Salisu Mu’azu, who confirmed the donation of medical items, noted that cholera was recorded in nine local government areas, of the 2,000 infected cases, noting that some had been discharged, while others were still receiving free medical treatment in government hospitals. daily post reports.

Prominent among the areas worst hit by the outbreak of the disease, according to Mu’azu, are Hadejia, Dutse, Kirikasamma, Birnin Kudu and Ringim.

However, the permanent secretary blamed the Hadejia case on water pollution, adding that there was the possibility of water contamination in the vicinity due to the prevalence of open defecation close to where vendors fetch water, which they sell to members of the community.

Mu’azu gave an assurance that the state government was already addressing the challenge, adding that residents of the area were being provided with the necessary assistance.
