Chanja Datti urges fct residents to recycle waste for wealth

By Abdullahi Lukman

Chanja Datti, an environmental-focused social enterprise, has called on residents of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to embrace plastic recycling as a means of generating sustainable wealth rather than merely disposing of waste.

Speaking during the “Waste to Wealth” road walk and sensitization campaign in Abuja, Head of Strategy & Innovation at Chanja Datti, Gabriel Onyebuolise, emphasized the need for households and businesses

to adopt sustainable waste management practices. The event was held in collaboration with the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) and is part of the “TRANSFORM Project” funded by Unilever, UK International Development, and EY.

Onyebuolise explained that the company collects various waste materials such as PET bottles, aluminum cans, cardboard, and paper, which are processed into semi-raw materials like pellets, flakes, and bales for use by manufacturers in industries such as plastic, textile, and beverages.

He noted that the TRANSFORM Project allows for waste processing closer to the source, reducing logistics costs and improving recycling efficiency.

“Instead of moving waste to distant factories, we process it on-site, starting from areas like Lifecamp,” Onyebuolise added.

Programme & Research Analyst at Chanja Datti, Martha Eginiwin, highlighted the company’s role in empowering citizens, especially youth and women, to earn income from waste.

“We see every plastic bottle as a resource, not trash. Our hubs collect and convert them into materials for industry,” she said.

Representing the Director of AEPB, Sherifat Lawal stressed that recycling is a civic responsibility, not just a trend.

She urged Lifecamp residents and beyond to separate waste at the source and partner with recycling centers to reduce pollution, improve health, and prevent environmental hazards like flooding.

The walk, which began at 8:25 a.m., engaged residents, estate communities, and small businesses on the benefits of recycling and the economic opportunities it offers.
