Environmental advocacy body, the Climate Africa Media Initiative Center (CAMIC) has emphasized the need for governments across the African continent to take proactive measures aimed at addressing the impacts of flooding.

This, according to the body became necessary as flooding has become a recurring and devastating phenomenon in many African countries, exacerbated by climate change, rapid urbanization, and inadequate infrastructure.

CAMIC noted that the call is part of its commitment to building climate resilience across the continent.

The body in a statement signed by its Chief Growth Officer, Pius Alabi, in Abuja on Tuesday, recommended the development of green infrastructure, such as permeable pavements and green roofs, which can absorb rainwater and reduce runoff.
It also called for the construction of well-designed drainage systems and the enforcement of building codes as ways of preventing urban flooding.

The statement read in part: “We are advocating for a series of flood mitigation measures that can be implemented at both the national and community levels. These strategies, if adopted widely, have the potential to significantly reduce the impact of floods on lives, property, and the environment.”

CAMIC, which is a non-governmental organization dedicated to advancing environmental sustainability and combating climate change, also emphasised the importance of protecting and restoring natural watersheds, which according to the body, plays a crucial role in managing water flow and reducing flood risks.

“CAMIC recommends the development of green infrastructure, such as permeable pavements and green roofs, which can absorb rainwater and reduce runoff. Additionally, the construction of well-designed drainage systems and the enforcement of building codes can help prevent urban flooding.

“Establishment and enhancement of meteorological and hydrological monitoring networks across Africa. These systems should be coupled with public awareness campaigns to ensure that communities are informed and prepared to respond to flood threats.

“By providing training and resources, communities can develop their own flood preparedness plans, including the construction of barriers, the creation of safe evacuation routes, and the establishment of emergency response teams.

“CAMIC urges African governments to adopt and enforce legislation that promotes sustainable land use, regulates construction in flood-prone areas, and integrates climate risk assessments into national development plans.

“Techniques such as agroforestry, crop diversification, and the construction of raised planting beds can help mitigate the impact of floods on food security.

“CAMIC calls for increased collaboration between African countries and international partners to share knowledge, technology, and financial resources. This includes tapping into global climate funds to support large-scale flood mitigation projects.

“CAMIC urges governments, non-governmental organizations, the private sector, and communities to work together in implementing these flood mitigation strategies. By taking a proactive approach, Africa can reduce the devastating effects of floods and build a more resilient future for all,” the statement added.
