An advocacy body, Climate Africa Media Initiative Centre (CAMIC) has emphasized the importance of collective action and community engagement in addressing land degradation and deforestation.

According to CAMIC, deforestation and degradation has become a pressing environmental challenge that threatens the livelihoods of millions across Africa and the globe, thus the need to urgently tackle it.

The body in a statement on Tuesday said land degradation, characterized by decline in land quality and productivity, impacts food security, biodiversity, and resilience to climate change.

“As part of our ongoing commitment to fostering sustainable practices, CAMIC emphasizes the importance of collective action and community engagement in addressing this issue,” the body said.

It said options available for communities and the government to solve deforestation and land degradation problems include; sustainable agriculture, implement soil conservation measures, restore degraded lands, encourage community-based approaches, policy advocacy and implementation, and raising awareness.
