Call for Policy Frameworks to Empower Agricultural Officers Amid Climate Challenges

By Dare Akogun

Agricultural experts have called on the government at all levels to implement policy frameworks that support and empower Agricultural Development Program (ADP) officers and stakeholders in the agricultural value chain.

The aim is to equip them with the necessary knowledge to assist farmers in improving productivity amidst evolving climate conditions.

This call was made by Olaide Olawuwo from Tru Organic Initiative at a one-day step-down workshop for farmers on the 2024 seasonal climate prediction and crop weather calendar for Kwara State.

The workshop, organized by HEDA Resource Centre in collaboration with the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet), focused on enlightening farmers about adapting to climate changes to enhance food production.

Olawuwo, who coordinated the workshop locally, highlighted the critical role of ADP officers in supporting farmers.

He emphasized the need for continuous education and capacity-building to ensure farmers receive up-to-date information on climate conditions and agricultural practices.

The workshop attracted various farming groups, including SWOFON, JDPM, ADP, and AFAM. Participants were provided with essential climate and crop weather forecasts to aid their decision-making for the upcoming planting season.

Olawuwo urged the government to prioritize the empowerment of agricultural officers and stakeholders.

He noted that effective support systems are crucial for addressing the challenges of climate change and achieving sustainable agricultural development in Kwara State.

This initiative underscores the importance of proactive measures and informed strategies to bolster agricultural resilience and ensure food security in the face of global climate change.
