Calabar Rubber Farmers Demand 100 Hectares To Cultivate New Plantations
Members of Natural Rubber Producers, Processors and Marketing Association of Nigeria (NARPPMAN) in Cross-River State, has called on the government to give them 100 hectares of land to enable their members cultivate new plantations.
According to the Solomon Iwot, said majority of the rubber plantation farmers in the state were struggling to maintain their farms.
On behalf of NARPPMAN, Solomon explained that the only rubber processing factory in Cross-Rivers State which was located at Biakpan and was not very accessible.
He said rubber is one agric product that can bolster the economics of both Rivers-State and the country in general adding that the Federal Government need to see rubber as goldmine and that it could sustain the nations’s economy as it did in the 1960’s to mid-80’s.
Solomon added that owing to inaccessibility of Biakpan rubber processing plant, rubber farmer in Cross-Rivers State look forwaard to rubber processing plants in Edo State State to process their rubber crumbs, with attendant heavy financial costs and stress.
He, therefore, called on government to establish additional rubber processing plants near raw material bases across Cross-Rivers State.
