Borno to Revitalize Biu Dam to Boost Irrigation Farming

By Abbas Nazil
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has pledged to restore the Biu Dam to revolutionize irrigation farming in the southern part of the state.
The commitment was made during his visit to the Emir of Biu, Mai Mustapha Umar Mustapha II, as part of his two-day working tour of the region.
The revitalization of the dam is expected to provide a lasting solution to water scarcity and enhance agricultural productivity in Biu and surrounding local government areas.
Governor Zulum described irrigation farming as a key component of his administration’s strategy to ensure food security and economic empowerment, particularly for communities affected by the Boko Haram insurgency.
He assured the Emir and the people of Biu that the government remains committed to investing in agriculture as a means of improving livelihoods and fostering resilience.
With the restoration of the dam, thousands of farmers will gain access to a reliable water source, allowing them to cultivate crops year-round instead of depending solely on seasonal rainfall.
This is particularly crucial in a region where erratic weather patterns have historically posed a threat to food production.
By ensuring a steady supply of water for irrigation, the initiative will not only boost crop yields but also reduce the risk of food shortages, enhance local trade, and create job opportunities for young people and vulnerable groups.
Beyond farming, the dam’s restoration is also expected to support livestock rearing and fish farming, diversifying income sources for many households.
It will help stabilize food prices in the region and reduce dependence on food imports, strengthening Borno’s agricultural economy.
Governor Zulum said his administration would roll out additional projects in Biu before the end of his tenure.
The Emir of Biu, in response, lauded the governor’s commitment to improving the lives of his people.
He particularly praised the launch of a ₦1 billion empowerment program designed to support youth and other vulnerable individuals in the emirate.
