Borno introduces N600 fuel subsidy for 5,000 farmers
By Faridat Salifu
In a bid to support farmers in conflict-affected regions, the Borno State government has unveiled a fuel subsidy program aimed at alleviating the soaring costs of agricultural activities.
During his recent visit to Bama, Governor Babagana Zulum announced that his administration would be providing subsidized fuel at N600 per litre to 5,000 farmers in areas severely impacted by Boko Haram insurgency.
The fuel subsidy program is designed to ease the burden on irrigation farmers, who are struggling with the high price of petrol, which is currently being sold at N1,200 per litre in Maiduguri.
The governor emphasized that the new rate would specifically benefit farmers involved in irrigation activities, particularly as the dry season approaches.
Governor Zulum also took the opportunity to distribute a range of agricultural inputs, including 2,000 bags of NPK fertiliser, 1,000 units of water pumps, and 620 gasoline pumps, at no cost to the farmers.
In addition, the state government provided 380 solar-powered water pumps, 1,000 sprayers, 800 rolls of flexible hose, and 1,000 litres of pesticide and seedlings, aiming to boost local agricultural production and create employment opportunities.
This intervention is part of Borno’s broader efforts to support farmers as they rebuild their livelihoods after years of insurgency.
Governor Zulum was accompanied by various stakeholders, including Senator Kaka Lawan and members of the House of Representatives from the region, during the event in Bama.
The Shehu of Bama, Dr. Umar Elkanemi, expressed his gratitude towards the governor for his ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability to the region, pledging that the support would not go unnoticed by the local communities.
The initiative reflects the state’s commitment to fostering sustainable development and supporting vulnerable populations as they recover from the impact of years of conflict.
