Bauchi State Prioritises WASH Investments to Grow Economy

By Faridat Salifu

Bauchi State is spearheading substantial investments in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) to catalyze economic growth.

The Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Media Network in the state underscored the transformative potential of prioritizing these fundamental needs and the extensive economic benefits associated with such investments.

Addressing the significance of WASH investments on Thursday, January 4, 2024, Mr. David Ayodele, Chairman of the WASH Media Network, highlighted the critical role of investing in WASH, emphasizing that beyond its positive impact on public health, education, and society, such investments are crucial for fostering national development.

Mr. Ayodele emphasized that the lack of proper access to sanitation, clean water, and hygiene significantly contributes to the rapid spread of diseases, malnutrition, economic disadvantage for women, and undermines overall economic growth and development.

Furthermore, he stressed the direct link between sanitation and economic productivity, shedding light on the economic toll of inadequate sanitation on health, tourism, and treatment costs.

Mr. Ayodele pointed out that insufficient access to water and sanitation perpetuates a cycle of poverty, limiting people’s access to essential services and opportunities.

Advocating for government prioritization of access to safe water supply by reducing the distance from communities, Mr. Ayodele called for a comprehensive approach involving budget programming and governance reforms.

This approach aims to position water as a strategic investment opportunity, emphasizing its role in sustainable economic development.

The advocacy for significant investment in water, sanitation, and hygiene in Bauchi State signifies a pivotal shift towards recognizing WASH as a catalyst for economic growth and development, positioning it as a vital component in the region’s economic development agenda.
