Bauchi Leads In Implementing ACReSAL Project

By Grace Samuel

Bauchi State has been recognized by the management of the Agro-Climatic Resilience In Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) as the top-performing state among the beneficiary states in the country.

This project, funded by the World Bank, aims to address climate change issues affecting agriculture and food security.

The state coordinator of ACReSAL, Dr. Ibrahim Kabir, disclosed this during a one-day capacity-building workshop for relevant stakeholders on land degradation in Bauchi.

He posited that the Bauchi is the only state that has appointed a senior special adviser on ACReSAL.

He said this appointment shows the great importance that the state Governor, Bala Mohammed attaches to the activities of ACReSAL.

Meanwhile, as part of efforts to enhance agro-climatic resilience in semi-arid landscapes and coastal regions, the Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas, on Monday, received Lia Sieghart, the Practice Manager of the World Bank for West Africa and the Bank Team on ACReSAL and ACReSAL Federal Project Management Unit at the Federal Ministry of Environment.

This comes few days after the Minister also hosted the World Bank Country Director, Mr. Shubham Chaudhuri and the representatives of subnational governments of Nigeria’s 8-Coastal States to a National Stakeholders Meeting for the implementation of the West Africa Coastal Management Program (WACA) in Nigeria.

We gathered that upon full takeoff, WACA will help the federal government ensure improvements in the livelihoods of Coastal communities in Nigeria by reducing the vulnerability of its coastal areas and promoting climate-resilient integrated coastal management, within the framework of sustainable environment management.

The program will help Nigeria obtain financing and expertise to sustainably manage our coastal areas, enhance industrial competitiveness, market access, innovation and investment promotion as well as promote productive employment for the rural communities and entrepreneurship development, and sustainable energy and environmental management.
