Bauchi Gov launches campaign to plant one million trees across state

By Abdullahi Lukman

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed on Thursday officially launched a campaign to plant one million trees across the state as part of the 2025 annual tree planting initiative.

The project aims to include both indigenous and fruit-bearing trees and will cover all 20 local government areas.

Speaking at the event in Dass Local Government Area, Governor Mohammed highlighted the urgent need to address widespread deforestation caused by illegal logging, bush burning, and over-grazing, which have left much of the land barren.

He called for tree planting to become a “people’s revolution” to restore the environment and create hope.

“Trees are life-sustaining assets that absorb carbon dioxide, improve soil fertility, recharge groundwater, and provide timber,” Mohammed said.

He added that the campaign’s target of one million trees includes species such as mango, guava, cashew, and orange trees, which will support environmental restoration, generate income for farmers, improve food security, and create jobs, especially for youth and women.

Seedlings will be distributed to households, schools, and farmers, with government extension workers engaged to monitor tree survival and community restoration efforts.

Mohammed described each tree planted as a shield against poverty, hunger, and displacement, urging local government chairmen to collaborate with councilors to ensure the campaign’s success in their wards.

Earlier, Alhaji Danlami Kaule, Commissioner for Housing and Environment, announced the campaign theme as “Plant a tree for a better tomorrow.”

He affirmed the ministry’s commitment to sustainable environmental practices and urban development, aiming to restore biodiversity and create greener communities for both people and wildlife.
