The Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN), has urged Enugu State residents to always bag their refuse before dumping them in waste receptacles to ensure refuse not returning to drainages.
The Chairman of CIBN, Enugu State Branch, Dr Iheanyi Nwogu, made the call while leading members of the institute to clean-up Lower Chime Avenue in New Haven axis of Enugu metropolis on Tuesday.
Nwogu said that the exercise, tagged: “Operation Clean Our Environment”, is part of the institute’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme this year.
He said that it was also part of the institute’s efforts in mobilising bankers, working in various bank branches in Enugu, to participate in this noble exercise of cleaning Enugu.
According to him, we are also complimenting the efforts of the state government and its agency – Enugu State Waste Management Authority (ESWAMA) – in keeping Enugu very clean and neat.
“We are calling on the residents of Enugu metropolis and the entire state to form the habit of proper handling and evacuation of refuse.
“Households should teach their children ways to always empty refuse in refuse bins or baskets with nylon bags; while they take the bags to a designated receptacle site in each neighbourhood.
“Our people should get ready and start opening up drains as the rainy season is here with us.
“This will help us check flooding and its attendant disasters to individuals and neighbourhoods,” he said.
The representative of ESWAMA, Mrs Wendy Moore, appreciated the bankers in Enugu for giving over five hours of their time to clean-up Lower Chime Avenue and sensitising residents to participate actively in environmental cleanliness.
“With a clean environment, our health will be improved. We can then use our incomes for more economically meaningful ventures and not medications,” Moore said.
Speaking, Executive Director of Daniel Ukwu Leadership Foundation, Mr Nkemakolam Ukwu, urged the state government to embark on massive awareness on the need for residents to protect and clean the environment.
“Cleanliness is close to godliness. We, as residents of the state, must contribute our little efforts to ensure that our surroundings are cleaned up and people dispose of refuse properly.
“Let us join ESWAMA and other well-meaning residents to teach our family members, especially our children, proper refuse bagging and disposal to keep our environment dirt-free and germ-free,” Ukwu said.
