Bagudu Calls for Global Unity in Climate Change Fight

By Abdullahi Lukman

Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, has called for global support in addressing climate change, emphasizing it as a collective problem requiring a unified response.

Bagudu made the plea during a courtesy visit by the United Nations Executive Secretary on Climate Change, Mr. Simon Stiell, to his ministry.

Bagudu highlighted Nigeria’s proactive approach, citing the successful implementation of the 2021-2025 climate policy and ambitious future plans.

He stressed the need for increased international collaboration, particularly in securing funding for sustainable climate projects.

Acknowledging ongoing challenges, including oil remediation in the Niger Delta and water scarcity exacerbated by climate impacts, Bagudu emphasized the government’s commitment to a just transition.

He outlined plans for modernizing industries and creating climate-resilient policies, especially in sectors like agriculture, livestock, and energy.

The Minister also called for innovative financing mechanisms, urging the UN system to leverage private sector capital to achieve long-term climate goals.

He reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s dedication to investing in initiatives such as livestock sector transformation and hydrocarbon remediation.

UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell commended Nigeria’s leadership in the global climate process and pledged the UN’s support for the country’s climate efforts.

He emphasized the importance of Nigeria’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in shaping the global climate agenda.

Nigeria, vulnerable to rising temperatures and extreme weather events, aims to mitigate these effects through its climate action plans.

The government’s call for global support aligns with the UN’s goal of limiting global temperature rise, requiring international cooperation and financial assistance for developing nations.
