The Niger State Government has declared next week Wednesday, Thursday and Friday as public holiday to ensure efficient distribution of food palliatives to residents in all the 25 local government areas in the state.
Speaking at a media briefing, Governor Mohammed Bago, announced that his administration has supplimented the N5 billion palliative fund from the federal government with additional N250 million.
He added that the state will release five trucks of rice for each w, and more bags of maize are being expected for distribution across the state.
The governor explained that the funds will be distributed to various wards, traditional institutions, and the internal displaced persons, with specific amount allocated to each group.
However, the governor said the palliatives are not free noting that the state and the local governments will repay 58% of the N5 billion over 20 months, with federal government covering the rest.
Local committees, including farmer and current public office holders, will oversee the distribution process while the committees at the local government and ward levels will decide which food items to buy based on the needs of their communities.
Akwa-Ibom govt, NGO partner to tackle oil spills, mining impacts
Akwa Ibom State Government through the state Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources has partnered with the Environmental Defenders Network (EDEN) to address impacts of illegal mining, oil spills, waste and other environmental issues facing the state.
The partnership was sealed when the EDEN team led by the executive direcor, Chima Williams, paid a courtesy visit to the ministry on Tuesday in Uyo, the state capital.
In a statement issued by EDEN, the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, Mr. Iquo Abia, noted that excesses of oil multinationals in the state need to be closely monitored with the help of the judiciary.
The statement signed by Elvira Jordan, EDEN Programme Manager, noted that the suggestion raised by EDEN on revocation of the ‘Certificate of Ownership’ of erring companies is worth considering towards adequate protection of the environment rights of the people.
Iquo Abia who received EDEN team on behalf of the commissioner gave insight into some actions that had been taken by the ministry and the Nationl Oil Spill Detection and Remediation Agency (NOSDRA), to determine the cost of the spill in Ibeno.
The permanent secretary also acknowledged the idea of developing an environmenta audit report of Akwa Ibom as suggested by EDEN team.
LASG, Chinese company sign MoU on 50mw solar power for LASU, other institutions
Lagos State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Chinese company to implement 50mw solar power systems across key higher institutions in the state to reduce their reliance on ntional grid electricity.

The agreement was made public by the state governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu during the just concluded state visit by Nigerian delegation led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Republic of China.
According to Sanwo-Olu, the solar power project aimed at generating about 50 megawatts, a cleaner and more affordable electricity at the Lagos State University (LASU), the State Education, and the State College of Medicine.
He noted that the initiative is expected to reduce the higher institutions’ reliance on national grid electricity and fossil fuels towrads contributing to environmental sustainability.
Governor Sanwo-Olu who signed the agreement on behalf of Lagos State, emphasised that this initiative underscores the state commitment to incorporating sustainable energy as a cornerstone of its economic development strategy.
Dangote Cement donates farm inputs to 60 farmers in host communities

The management of Dangote Cement, Ibeshe plant, Ogun State, Southwest Nigeria, in what has become an annual programme, has empowered 60 farmers from 17 host communities with fertilizers, herbicides, and knapsack sprayers to help them in the upcoming farming season.
During the presentation of the agricultural supplies in Ibeshe, the farmers also received intensive trianing on the ”Integrated Pest Management and Crop Protection,” which covered the application of the donated inputs as well as general pest management and crop protection techniques.
Speaking during the event, the Director of the Ibeshe plant, Roy Uttam, explained that the farm inputs donation is part of Dangote Cement Social Investment drive, which focuses on four key areas -Eduction, Health, Empowerement and Infrastructure.
His words: ” Today, sixty-farmers across our 17 host communities are being trained on the theme – Integrated Pest Management and Crop Protection, and each farmer will go home with 2 bags s of 50kg and Urea fertilizers, 3 litres of Force Up Herbicide and 15 litre capacity Kinapsack Sprayer.
Kano govt set to create two new environment -friendly cities, rebuild security tower
Kano State Government in Northwest Nigeria has announced plans to create two environmentally -friendly cities to help decongest densely populated Kano metropolis.
In addition, the state government has palanned to remodel, rebuild and equipped security tower at the entrance of Kano metropolis to enhance security and sfeguard the lives and propert of residents.
Governor Abbar Kabir Yusuf disclosed this recently while handing compensation papers to people whose farmland were taken over at Yar Gaya, Rijiyar Gwangwan, Lambu and Ungwar Rimi.
In his address, Governor Yusuf emphasised that the new city projects are designed to reduce congestion in Kano metropolis and establish environmentally -friendly urban centres equipped with essential amenities.
The governor commended the efforts of communities and traditional rulers affected by the planned new cities in facilitating compensation process. He assured the public of a transparent and smooth resettlement exercise.
