The Editor
The successful candidate will perform a variety of editorial duties, such as laying out, revising content of written materials, in preparation for final publication. The candidate also oversees the publication.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Prepare, rewrite and edit copy to improve readability, or supervise others who do this work;
• Read copy or proof to detect and correct errors in spelling, punctuation, and syntax;
• Allocate print space for story text, photos, and illustrations according to space parameters and copy significance, using knowledge of layout principles;
• Plan the contents of publications according to the publication’s style, editorial policy, and publishing requirements;
• Verify facts, dates, and statistics, using standard reference sources;
• Review and approves proof submitted by the news room prior to publication production;
• Develop story or content ideas, considering reader or audience appeal;
• Oversee publication production, including artwork, layout, computer typesetting, and printing, ensuring adherence to deadlines and budget requirements;
• Confer with the Editor-in-Chief, the Managing Director and other editorial staff members regarding placement and emphasis of developing news stories;
• Assign topics, events and stories to individual writers or reporters for coverage;
• Read, evaluate and edit manuscripts or other materials submitted for publication and confer with authors regarding changes in content, style or organisation, or publication;
• Monitor news-gathering operations to ensure utilisation of all news sources, such as press releases, telephone contacts, radio, television, wire services, and other reporters;
• Supervise and coordinate work of reporters and other editors;
• Select local, state, national, and international news items received from wire services, based on assessment of items’ significance and interest value;
• Any other duty assigned.
Qualification and Experience
• Minimum of a degree in English or Mass Communication. A master’s degree in cognate area will be an advantage;
• Minimum of 8 years’ proven journalism experience with at least 4 years at a middle editorial position;
• Membership of relevant professional bodies is important.
Skills and Competencies
• Rich professional experience in editorial work;
• Understands the structure and content of the English Language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
• Knowledgeable about media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills;
• Has knowledge of laws, legal codes, court procedures, precedents, government regulations, executive orders, agency rules, and the democratic political process.
• Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and a passion for the job.
• Computer literate and knowledgeable about Microsoft Office Suite;
