Anambra Launches N10 Million House Remodeling Competition for Onitsha Landlords

The Anambra State government, led by Deputy Governor Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, has issued a stern warning to landlords in Onitsha, the state’s commercial hub, declaring that the government will no longer tolerate the deterioration of the city.
This declaration was made during a community meeting with landlords from the Onitsha South Local Government Area at the council secretariat on Wednesday.
Dr. Ibezim also announced that the state government has initiated a program offering a cash prize of N10 million to the first street in Onitsha to complete the remodeling of their buildings between February 1 and March 10, 2024.
During the meeting, the deputy governor expressed concern over the absence of seepage pits in most houses in Onitsha, and the improper disposal of waste into drainage systems and rivers, posing health hazards to residents.
He emphasized the need for landlords to clear obstructed drains, manage toxic waste disposal, and improve the aesthetic appeal of their buildings.
Commissioner for Environment, Felix Odimegwu, reiterated the objectives of the meeting, emphasizing the importance of maintaining clean drains, afforestation, and building remodeling.
He outlined the “Ka Anambra Chakee” initiative, which incentivizes streets to collaborate on remodeling projects, with cash rewards for successful completion.
Odimegwu highlighted the government’s commitment to transforming Onitsha and improving its overall cleanliness and appeal.
Chief Emeka Joseph Orji, the local council chairman, affirmed the administration’s efforts in enforcing cleanliness standards and removing illegal structures within the past year.
He emphasized the council’s dedication to restoring Onitsha to its rightful position and enforcing regulations to prevent further deterioration of the city’s environment.
Michael Okonkwo, Chairman of the Urban Regeneration Council, emphasized the government’s vision to emulate advanced cities and position Onitsha as a conducive environment for business and healthy living.
Chief Ignatius Agabarugo, representing the Fegge landlords, expressed readiness to collaborate with the government on the initiative.
However, he raised concerns about fraudulent practices by unscrupulous individuals during construction renewals and urged the government to address issues of double taxation and property rates.
The collective efforts of the government and landlords aim to revitalize Onitsha, promoting cleanliness, aesthetic appeal, and creating an enabling environment for residents and businesses alike.
