Anambra govt directs waste evacuation firms to replace concrete slabs
The Anambra state government has directed firms handling its Desilting and Waste Evacuation programme to replace all concrete slabs removed in the course of work.
Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, Anambra Deputy Governor and Chairman, Waste Evacuation/Desilting Committee, gave the directive in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Awka on Wednesday.
NAN reports that concrete slabs on drains connecting some roads, which were removed and abandoned, was making movement difficult for motorists.
Ibezim urged the firms, including volunteers, to execute the tasks with minimal discomfort to motorists, pedestrians and residents.
He said all concrete slabs removed to enable the clearing of drains, which had cut off some roads, especially in Awka and Onitsha, should be immediately replaced to reconnect them.
“We want to appeal to the good people of Anambra to be patient with us as we carry out this task, it is our desire that they encounter minimal inconveniences as a result of this exercise.
“However, we are calling on all those concerned to replace the slabs and reconnect the roads, and also clear refuse generated so that movement can be free,” he said.
Ibezim said the clean up project, which started on March 18, would be supervised by the state government and handed over to the local government councils after a sustainable environmental management structure must have been put in place.
He said the handover would bring the project closer to the masses for friendly environmental practices.
