The Minister of Health Dr Osagie Ehanire has called for priority of health workers and a conducive environment, in provision of water which is more essential to inhabitants.
Dr Ehanire made this call on Thursday in Abuja, during a ministerial press briefing in commemoration of World Health Day, and the significance of this year to mark the 75th Anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization, also in celebration of World Health Workers week.
The theme of the 2023 World Health Day is “Health for All, Strengthening PHC to Build Resilient Systems”, while the theme of the World Health Workers Week is “Investing in the Health WorkForce”.

The minister said in marking this triple
significant events in the health sector, which are more major occasions for the ministry of health.
Dr Ehanire went ahead in emphasizing on the basic amenities for the health workers, as it applies to the work health day theme “Health for All ”, saying electricity or renewable energy, solar power and water should be put in place.
He added that the environment will be more attractive to workers, and an advantage to services round the clock, “because they cannot do without light on duty deliveries at night, Emergencies at night will be more efficient and that can save lives.”
However, minister expressed that while Speaking to one of the key initiatives of the Buhari administration, “to create a balanced health system by strengthening the PHC network in Nigeria, with increased
investment in the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) to foster the Primary healthcare Under One Roof (PHCUOR) concept.”
Dr Ehanire, emphasized that the idea being to integrate PHC activities of Federal, State and Local government, in one Authority, for synergy and to reduce
fragmentation and waste of resources in management and delivery of PHC services.
“The Federal Government, in a bid to reverse poor health indices and provide Universal Health Coverage initiated the revitalization of about 10,000 primary healthcare centers nationwide, exemplified by the revitalized Kuchigoro PHC in FCT.
“More than 4,000 PHCs have been
revitalized so far, while working towards a new PHC model equipped with staff quarters, solar power, and assured potable water supply, to enable 24/7 service provision to citizens. These steps have improved primary healthcare services in Nigeria and reduced challenges women face in childbirth and addressing home emergencies,” the minister.
In his remarks, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), country representatives while congratulating the WHO on the 75 anniversary of public health achievements, said workers are the backbone of every health system.
He further stated that It’s an important moment to pause and acknowledge the significant contributions and tremendous dedication of these men and women who continue to serve tirelessly on the frontlines saving lives and improving the well being of Nigerians. “as the Honorable Minister has already mentioned.”
“The COVID 19 pandemic had a significant effect on the mental health lives and family relationships of health care workers. Sadly, some of these frontline warriors lost their lives in the line of duty, but their sacrifices will never be forgotten.
“Health care workers and health facilities are also targeted in conflict zones, and during periods of upheaval, with devastating consequences every day, we’re reminded that health workers are incredible people doing incredible jobs under incredible circumstances” he added.
