Professor Mandu Essien-Ibok of the Fisheries and Aquatic Environmental Department, University of Uyo, and Vice Chairman of Vika Integrated Farms, has urged university students, graduates and other youths to embrace agriculture, regardless of their field of study.

Prof. Ibok gave the advice during a meeting at Vika Integrated Farms in Uyo on 4 February 2026, where he conducted guests on a tour of the farm, which serves as a training ground for farmers, students, and corporate organisations across Nigeria.

Describing agriculture as a “cash cow that cannot go out of season,” he said proper training and understanding of seasonal cycles are key to success.

“We plant virtually everything and they are doing well. Whatever course you read, come into agriculture. You’ll enjoy it; just know the time and follow the seasons,” he said.

Also speaking, Dr. Ade Essien-Ibok, a medical doctor, highlighted the health benefits of farming, particularly gardening, positing that the health benefits of physical activities cannot be overemphasised.

“Most health issues arise from a sedentary lifestyle. Gardening provides an avenue for physical activity it burns calories, keeps you active, and improves overall wellbeing,” she said.
