Ejikeme Patrick Nwosu, a trailblazing Nigerian chemist, is making waves in the global science and technology community with his groundbreaking innovations in sustainable energy and waste management.

His most remarkable achievement, developing a process to transform urine into a source of clean energy, an invention has earned him recognition both at home and abroad.

Hailing from Awka in Anambra State, Nwosu has emerged as a leading figure in the quest for eco-friendly energy solutions, leveraging his expertise in chemistry to turn waste into valuable resources.

Nwosu’s signature invention is a patented process that isolates ammonia from urine, producing flammable gases through a device he calls the patrium flask reactor. This revolutionary method creates a renewable energy source that could potentially alleviate energy shortages in regions with limited access to traditional fuel.

Beyond this innovation, Nwosu has developed a range of impactful technologies, including Fire-Resistant Paint, a chemical formulation that enhances fire safety by preventing materials from burning. He has also developed Advanced Separation Apparatus, a device for purifying mixtures, showcasing his versatility in chemical engineering. With Urine-Based Fertilizer, Nwosu uses human urine as a raw material to create sustainable fertilizer. This innovation is complemented by a specially designed urine-diverting toilet that simplifies collection and processing.

Nwosu’s work has not only advanced scientific knowledge but also driven real-world applications. In 2021, his company, Lumos Laboratories Nigeria Limited, partnered with the Nigerian government to implement a biogas system that converts biodegradable waste and urine into electricity and cooking gas. This system is now operational in correctional centers across the country, offering a cost-effective and environmentally friendly energy solution.

In 2022, Lumos Laboratories expanded its reach through a collaboration with Hydrofuel Canada Inc., aiming to produce green hydrogen, ammonia, and electricity from human and animal waste. This international partnership highlights the global potential of Nwosu’s innovations.

Nwosu’s achievements have earned him numerous accolades. He was named “Anambra Person of the Week” and recognized by former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo as one of six Nigerian inventors advancing science and technology under the administration of then-President Muhammadu Buhari.

Nwosu’s academic foundation laid the groundwork for his groundbreaking inventions. After earning a degree in pure and industrial chemistry from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, he pursued a master’s degree in organic chemistry at the University of Ibadan. This robust education equipped him with the tools to pioneer innovative solutions in chemistry and environmental science.

Nwosu’s work underscores the potential of science to address pressing global challenges. By turning waste into energy and creating practical, sustainable technologies, he offers a blueprint for a cleaner and more efficient future. His innovations stand as a testament to Nigeria’s potential to lead in the global transition to renewable energy.

As the world grapples with the need for sustainable development, Ejikeme Patrick Nwosu continues to inspire with his vision, ingenuity, and commitment to harnessing science for the betterment of humanity.
