Urban prawl contributes to Africa’s environmental crisis – CAMIC

Environmental advocacy body, Climate Africa Media Initiative Center (CAMIC), has stated that urban sprawl is contributing to environmental challenges across Africa. Urban sprawl is the uncontrolled expansion of cities and towns into undeveloped land, often characterized by low-density housing
The body said, urban sprawl, combined with lack of strategic planning, has emerged as a critical environmental challenge across African cities, affecting natural ecosystems, increasing pollution levels, and straining resources.
It urged governments at all levels to collaborate with urban planners, and communities to address the issues through sustainable urban growth that protects the environment and supports the well-being of all residents.
CAMIC in a statement signed by its Chief Growth Officer Pius Alabi, made available to NatureNews in Abuja on Thursday, also stated thatnAfrica is experiencing rapid urbanization, with populations in major cities rising faster than ever. It further stated that while this growth can drive economic development, unmanaged urban expansion leads to the encroachment of natural areas, depletion of green spaces, and a surge in carbon emissions.
“Such developments not only compromise air and water quality but also contribute to the urban heat island effect, making cities warmer and less habitable.
“Without comprehensive planning, cities face immense pressure on their infrastructure and resources, leading to environmental degradation, limited access to clean water, and inadequate waste management. This lack of planning is fueling urban sprawl that could erode Africa’s rich biodiversity and harm community health, livelihoods, and the environment.
“CAMIC is calling for measures such as the implementation of green corridors, community parks, and accessible public transportation to reduce vehicle dependency, decrease emissions, and promote a healthier urban environment,” the statement read in part.
CAMIC added that it continues to collaborate with local governments, NGOs, and community stakeholders to address the adverse effects of urban sprawl. Through educational campaigns, policy advocacy, and research, CAMIC aims to support cities in creating sustainable and livable urban spaces that safeguard natural ecosystems and improve quality of life.
