The Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU) in Igbariam has launched a five-year Climate Action Strategy Plan aimed at advancing a sustainable economy and fostering a livable Anambra State.
The launch took place on Saturday during the Climate Action Summit, which focused on the theme “Tremendous Strategy for a Sustainable Future.”
At the summit, the university introduced Climate Action Ambassadors and Students’ Environment Police.
The convener and Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kate Omenugha, emphasized that to effectively fight climate change, Anambra State plans to plant a million trees over the next five years.
She highlighted the importance of cooperation and the outlined timeline for implementing various climate action initiatives.
Prof. Omenugha stated that the summit’s objectives include addressing the catastrophic effects of climate change on the state and the university environment and developing strategies to align with global climate action efforts.
Dr. Joseph Onoja, Director-General of the Nigeria Conservation Foundation (NCF), noted that Nigeria’s forest cover has significantly decreased since independence, making tree planting and restoration essential for combating climate change.
He emphasized that such actions are crucial for maintaining ecological balance, promoting economic development, and preserving cultural heritage.
Dr. Onoja also commended COOU for institutionalizing environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation programs.
Dr. Felix Odimegwu, Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, praised the university for aligning with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s green initiative.
He urged the involvement of stakeholders and students in the project to ensure its success and broader impact.
The Climate Action Strategy Plan signifies COOU’s commitment to environmental sustainability and its proactive approach to addressing the pressing issue of climate change.
By fostering collaboration and engaging the community, the university aims to create a model for sustainable development in Anambra State.
