The University of Lagos Alumni Association, FCT Branch, has awarded scholarships to brilliant but indigent students of public secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
The ceremony was graced by President of UNILAG Alumni Association, Engr. (Dr.) Ifeoluwa Oyedele, while the FCT Administration was represented by the Mandate Secretary, FCT Education Secretariat, Dr. Danlami Hayyo.
Presenting the N2.5 million scholarship, FCT Branch Chairman, Alh. Aliu Akoshile said the 24 beneficiary students were selected from the Six Area Councils of FCT based on a rigorous screening process.
The Chairman, who disclosed that Alumni members in FCT have launched a N10 million scholarship endowment, said the award covers the tuition for six terms as well as the WAEC/NECO registration for the students.
While expressing appreciation to Alumni members who have contributed to the endowment fund, he said the former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Kanu Agabi, singlehandedly offered N5 million support.
The Chairman, who urged the students to remain focused on their education and maintain high academic standards, reiterated that they should eschew all forms of vices in their communities.
Alh. Akoshile encouraged the female students in particular not to regard gender as an inhibition, saying they have a role model in the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, who has shattered academic records and risen to the zenith of her distinguished professional career.
The event was also graced by many alumni in FCT, including the chairman and secretary of the Branch’s education committee, Dr. Emmanuel Ibe and Engr. Bldr. A. M. Ajani.
Also present were four Directors from the FCT Education Secretariat, Principal of the scholars and other members of the University of Lagos Alumni Association in the FCT.
