The United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) and the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB) have joined forces to establish a sustainable plastic value chain through circular economy practices.
This initiative birthed on Thursday, November 30, 2023, in Abuja, stands as a collective response to address plastic pollution and combat the far-reaching impacts of climate change.
Dr. Fred Kpakol, Senior Special Assistant on Environment to Mr. Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) Minister, expressed the FCT administration’s unwavering commitment to supporting the plastic waste project for a sustainable environment during a seminar on promoting a sustainable plastic value chain.
Highlighting the urgency of tackling plastic waste issues in Abuja and Nigeria, Kpakol emphasized the crucial role of advocacy and awareness in promoting responsible plastic use and disposal. Mr. Olubunmi Olusanya, Director of Pollution Control and Environmental Health at the Federal Ministry of Environment, underscored the global significance of plastic waste collection and its profound impact on health and the ecosystem.
Olusanya drew attention to the evolving plastic economy and stressed the importance of embracing a circular economy model, which focuses on minimizing waste and maximizing the value of resources by prolonging material use.
Mr. Benjamin Enwerem, Director of Solid Waste Management North at AEPB, outlined the strategic selection of Jabi for the plastic project. He noted the area’s diversity, encompassing various settlements, business institutions, organized settlements, villages, commercial centers, schools, and offices. Enwerem detailed the project’s scope, targeting both formal and informal settlements around Jabi for comprehensive plastic recycling.
Ms. Nahomi Nishio, Project Manager at UNIDO, urged collaboration from the private sector for effective plastic waste management. Nishio emphasized that the seminar aimed to raise awareness about plastic recycling and reuse, underlining the crucial role of collective efforts in driving sustainable environmental practices.
