UN-Water has opened a global consultation from 22 October to 21 November 2025 to gather stakeholder input for the UN SDG 6 Synthesis Report 2026.
The consultation includes an online survey and virtual discussions aimed at identifying successes, gaps, and lessons to guide the next UN development agenda.
The report will feed into the 2026 session of the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), offering an in-depth review of SDG 6 on clean water and sanitation.
It will reflect on ten years of progress, highlight achievements in water policy and cooperation, and outline UN-Water’s vision for the remaining years to 2030 and beyond.
This effort builds on growing political momentum for water action since the 2030 Agenda’s adoption.
Initiatives such as the International Decade for Action 2018–2028, the SDG 6 Global Acceleration Framework launched in 2020, and the 2023 SDG Summit have strengthened global commitment to water and sanitation issues.
Within the UN system, the Secretary-General’s appointment of the first Special Envoy on Water and the launch of the UN System-wide Strategy for Water and Sanitation in 2024 mark key milestones.
The four-year Collaborative Implementation Plan (2025–2028) will guide the strategy’s rollout.
The consultation also forms part of preparations for upcoming global water conferences.
Following the 2023 UN Water Conference—which generated over 840 voluntary commitments—the next conferences are set for 2026 in the United Arab Emirates, co-hosted by Senegal, and 2028 in Tajikistan.
