Transport Ministry Promotes Bicycles as Eco-Friendly Commuting Option for Sustainable Future

The Ministry of Transportation is taking proactive steps to promote a cleaner environment and a healthier lifestyle by considering the use of bicycles as an alternative means of commuting.

The Director of Road Transport and Mass Transit Administration, Musa Ibrahim, announced this initiative during a One Day Stakeholders Sensitisation Meeting held in Abuja on Thursday.

The primary aim of this endeavour is to emphasize and elevate the significance of cycling in Nigeria, which is expected to lead to a reduction in road crash incidents.

It is noteworthy that this meeting coincided with World Bicycle Day, an annual event observed on June 3rd following a resolution by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

World Bicycle Day acknowledges the bicycle’s unique attributes, durability, and versatility as a simple, affordable, reliable, clean, and environmentally friendly mode of transportation, promoting environmental stewardship and good health. This year’s theme, as designated by the United Nations for 2023, is “Riding Together for a Sustainable Future.”

The Director further highlighted various benefits of promoting bicycles as a means of transportation. Advocates have cited its
potential to combat poverty, support sustainable development, strengthen education (including physical education for children and young people), promote health, prevent diseases, and foster social inclusion.

Emmanuel John, CEO of Ochenuell Mobility and a proponent of Non-Motorised Transportation (NMT), emphasized in his presentation titled ‘Power of Cycling’ that cycling initiatives extend beyond addressing climate change and reducing carbon footprints.

He proposed establishing a non-motorized transportation culture in the country through the implementation of Green Corridors, which could address some of the mentioned challenges.

John also expressed that the support and implementation of the National Stakeholders Forum on Bicycle Transportation by the Federal Government would significantly alleviate many issues associated with the widespread use of motorized transportation.

The Stakeholders Sensitisation Meeting witnessed the participation of representatives from various organizations, including the Nigeria Institute of Transport Technology in Zaria, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Federal Road Maintenance Agency, the National Union of Road Transport Workers, the Greenlight Initiative, and the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA).

All these stakeholders came together to support and promote the adoption of bicycles as an eco-friendly and sustainable mode of transport in Nigeria.
