Transcorp Hilton Abuja and Connected Development (CODE), jointly marked the 2025 Earth Hour with a event centered on climate action and sustainability.

Themed: “Give an Hour for Earth,” the event took place from 8:30 PM to 9:30 pm at the hotel’s lobby, gathering environmental advocates, guests, and performers to underscore the urgent need for collective action against climate change.

The evening began with an introduction by Ms. Ijeoma Osuji, E-commerce Manager at Transcorp Hilton Abuja, who set a reflective tone for the gathering. Participants were treated to inspiring musical performances by the AMEMUSO choir, whose songs resonated with the themes of harmony and environmental stewardship.

In his welcome address, Hotel Manager, Mohammed Said Khali, stressed the significance of Earth Hour in the global fight against climate change.

“We join Hilton properties and millions around the world in observing Earth Hour,” Khsli said, adding, “At Transcorp Hilton Abuja, sustainability is at the heart of our operations, encompassing waste recycling and energy conservation. Our partnership with CODE is vital in raising awareness about sustainable living practices.”

Hamzat Lawal, CEO of CODE, reinforced the importance of Earth Hour as a catalyst for climate action during his opening remarks.

He highlighted the event’s coincidence with World Water Day, calling attention to the pressing need for transitioning from discussions to tangible climate solutions.

“Tonight, we reflect on our impact on the planet. Together, we must strive to drive meaningful change towards a sustainable future,” Lawal said.

There was a live demonstration by The Upcycling Architect (TUPA), who showcased innovative uses for plastic waste, transforming discarded materials into functional art pieces.

This demonstration served as a poignant reminder of the importance of waste reduction and repurposing in mitigating environmental degradation.

The AMEMUSO choir, in a celebratory gesture, led attendees in singing a birthday tribute for Tony O. Elumelu, CFR, Chairman of Transcorp Hilton Group, acknowledging his commitment to sustainability and environmental initiatives.

Engaging the youth in climate discourse, a debate titled “Is Climate Change Good?” featured secondary school students from Government Secondary Schools (GSS) Kubwa and Wuse.

The students presented opposing views, with one side arguing that climate change is a human-induced crisis, while the other contended that it is a natural occurrence.

This debate fostered critical engagement and awareness among the younger generation about the complexities of climate change.

The evening concluded with a symbolic musical procession led by the AMEMUSO choir, moving from the lobby to the pool area. Attendees participated in sustainability pledges, committing to implement eco-friendly habits in their daily lives.

In closing remarks, the CODE team encouraged all participants to take individual responsibility for climate action.

“True change begins with our choices. Every small pledge counts, and it is our collective duty to care for the planet. Let’s protect what we love and reconvene next year to celebrate our progress,” the statement emphasized.

The 2025 Earth Hour event at Transcorp Hilton Abuja successfully highlighted the urgent need for climate action, bringing together diverse voices to advocate for a sustainable future.
