President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to unveil a comprehensive energy initiative for Nigeria at the ongoing Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The initiative reaffirms Nigeria’s commitment to energy security, sustainability, and providing electricity access to millions of underserved Nigerians.
The summit, attended by over 20 African leaders, government officials, private sector representatives, and development partners, aims to accelerate efforts to ensure access to electricity for 300 million Africans by 2030.
According to a 2022 World Bank report, only 61 percent of Nigeria’s population currently has access to electricity, with 73 percent of rural areas still off the grid.
Nigeria’s Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications disclosed that the forthcoming energy compact would focus on renewable energy, including solar power, to improve electricity coverage and align with global climate action goals.
President Tinubu’s administration has already attracted $5.7 billion in clean energy investments, underscoring the government’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions.
The energy sector reforms under Tinubu’s administration have also seen significant investments.
These include $400 million in the Presidential Metering Initiative and $700 million for clean mobility and cooking technologies.
The government’s efforts are geared toward creating a $1 trillion economy by 2030, leveraging international partnerships and funding to drive development.
The Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit provides a platform for strategic discussions on energy access and its implications for critical sectors such as health, education, agriculture, and food security. Beyond electrification, these efforts aim to contribute to achieving sustainable development goals across the continent.
While in Tanzania, President Tinubu is engaging with global investors and energy corporations to attract foreign direct investments into Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.
His administration hopes to position Nigeria as a key player in Africa’s journey toward widespread electrification and climate resilience.
Further details on the energy plan are expected to be announced during the summit.
