Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Tinubu on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) and former deputy governor of Lagos state, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, has reaffirmed Federal Government’s commitment to achieving environmentally-sound management of green and sustainable chemistry in the country.

Adefulire said this was in line with the transformative goals of the United Nation’s 2030 Agenda for sustainable development.

She stated this at the maiden African Regional Conference of Green and Sustainable Chemistry sponsored by the American Chemical Society (ACS), held at the Sheraton Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos.

Represented at the event by her Senior Technical Advisor on SDGs, Dr, Bala Usman, the presidential aide noted that Nigeria’s strategic approach to the implementation of SDGs were at national and sub-national levels.

She said, “At the national level, OSSAP-SDGs works closely with the federal ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) to integrate the relevant SDGs programmes into their sectoral policies and plans.”

She noted that at the sub-national level, similar institutional structures have been adopted by the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The Sustainable Development Goals were developed at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable development, held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2012.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a set of international development goals from 2016 to 2030, which was adopted by the UN Sustainable Development Summit held in September 2015, building on the success of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Nigeria’s 2020 Voluntary National Review (VNR) on SDGs focuses on 17 areas which include key issues such as poverty, inclusive economy, health and wellbeing, education, gender equality, peace and security and the enabling environment among others.
