Thailand and Sweden have moved to strengthen bilateral cooperation on climate change, with officials from both countries meeting in Bangkok to explore joint strategies on climate action, investment, and sustainable development.

The discussions took place on April 3, 2026, between Dr. Pirun Saiyasitpanich, Director-General of Thailand’s Department of Climate Change and Environment, and Sweden’s Ambassador to Thailand, Anna Hammargren, as part of ongoing efforts to expand partnerships addressing environmental challenges.

Both sides reviewed Thailand’s current climate initiatives, including progress on its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC 3.0) and the development of a new national climate change law aimed at strengthening policy and regulatory frameworks.

The meeting also focused on opportunities for increased financial collaboration and investment, with both countries expressing interest in leveraging resources and expertise to accelerate climate solutions and sustainable economic growth.

Officials highlighted the importance of international cooperation in addressing global climate risks, noting that partnerships like the one between Thailand and Sweden can help drive innovation and share best practices across regions.

Looking ahead, the two countries are preparing for the Sweden-Thailand Sustainable Development Forum scheduled for May 29, 2026, which is expected to further advance collaboration on key issues.

The forum will prioritise areas such as energy transition, sustainable forest management, and achieving enhanced climate targets through coordinated action and knowledge exchange.

Dr. Pirun emphasised Thailand’s commitment to building a low-carbon and climate-resilient economy, stressing that public participation will play a critical role in achieving long-term sustainability goals.

He noted that the country’s climate strategy is designed to balance economic growth with environmental protection, ensuring that development pathways remain inclusive and resilient to future climate impacts.

The engagement reflects Thailand’s broader ambition to strengthen its international climate partnerships while aligning national policies with global efforts to mitigate climate change and adapt to its effects.
