In a move that underscores its commitment to tackling the pressing issue of climate change, the Taraba State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has announced the elevation of its existing Climate Change Unit to the status of a full-fledged department.
This significant development was disclosed by Hajia Aishat Barde, the State Commissioner of Environment and Climate Change, on Monday.
Under the visionary leadership of Hajia Barde, who officially assumed office following an inauguration ceremony presided over by Governor Agbu Kefas on July 18, 2023, the ministry is poised to strengthen its climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.
The newly established Department of Climate Change will feature specialized units dedicated to three key aspects: Adaptation, Mitigation, and Vulnerability.
This organizational structure aims to streamline efforts and expertise in tackling the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change.
Hajia Barde emphasized the urgency of raising awareness about climate change within Taraba State.
“Many Tarabans are unaware of the far-reaching effects, root causes, and associated dangers of climate change,” she stated.
To address this gap in knowledge, she plans to launch extensive awareness campaigns and conduct sensitization workshops.
Moreover, she aims to ensure that all branches of the government fully comprehend and assume their respective roles in the fight against climate change.
One of the notable aspects of Hajia Barde’s approach is her intention to actively engage the youth, recognized as powerful catalysts for change, and women, who are often disproportionately impacted by the consequences of climate change.
Her strategy involves their participation in afforestation initiatives and other climate-related endeavors across the state.
Hajia Barde brings a wealth of expertise and experience to her new role. She began her career as a staff member in the Department of Climate Change within the Federal Ministry of Environment.
Her proficiency in environmental issues, climate change advocacy, and greenhouse gas management led to her recent assignment to the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), a pivotal council with presidential oversight over climate change matters in Nigeria.
With her background as a geologist, environmentalist, and gender activist, Hajia Barde is well-equipped to drive impactful change in the realm of climate action and environmental sustainability within Taraba State.
As the newly established Department of Climate Change takes shape, it is poised to become a driving force in the state’s efforts to combat climate change and promote a resilient future for its citizens.
