The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, has called on parliaments worldwide to intensify their efforts on climate action.
Abbas made this appeal on the occasion of the International Day of Parliamentarism, which is celebrated with the theme “Climate actionClimate ChangeInternational Day of Parliamentarism.”
He emphasized that the International Day of Parliamentarism, commemorating the establishment of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), serves as an opportunity for reflection for parliaments globally.
Regarding the 2023 theme, ‘Parliaments for the Planet,’ which focuses on climate action, the Speaker stated its relevance in the face of the ongoing battle against climate change.
The Speaker highlighted that the Nigerian Parliament, as a member of the IPU, will continue to diligently collaborate with other parliaments worldwide to address climate change through legislation.
He emphasized the crucial role played by the Nigerian Parliament over the years in tackling climate change-related issues, emphasizing that this commitment will persist in the future.
Speaker Abbas emphasized the significant threat posed by climate change to humanity, underscoring the urgent need for concerted action to mitigate its impacts.
According to the United Nations, the chosen theme for this year’s International Day of Parliamentarism, ‘Parliaments for the Planet,’ aims to mobilize parliaments and parliamentarians to take action on the climate emergency.
