The Sokoto State government has launched efforts at creating a comprehensive climate change policy document aimed at tackling environmental challenges and promoting sustainable development.

This initiative was highlighted during a two-day validation session organized by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with the Sokoto State Ministry of Environment.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Mustapha Alkali, who stood in for the Commissioner, Nura Shehu Tangaza, officially opened the session, emphasizing the importance of collective action in addressing the climate crisis.

He described the policy as crucial for the state’s future, stressing the intrinsic link between a healthy environment and societal progress.

Alkali noted that environmental protection is integral to governance, peace, and life itself, stating: “If you save your environment, you’re saving your life. If your environment is not conducive, nothing will be achieved.”

His remarks underscored the urgency of environmental action as a prerequisite for stability and growth in Sokoto State.

The session brought together stakeholders from government agencies, civil society organizations, and environmental experts to review and validate the draft policy document.

Discussions focused on strategies to mitigate climate change impacts, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and promote sustainability in the state.

The draft policy outlines specific measures to foster resilience against climate impacts and adapt to environmental changes.

It aims to provide a roadmap for decision-making, set measurable targets, and enhance accountability among stakeholders.

By addressing these critical areas, the policy seeks to secure the long-term environmental and economic well-being of Sokoto State.

Once finalized, the climate change policy document is expected to serve as a guide for implementing actionable steps towards environmental protection and sustainable development.

It will prioritize reducing emissions, adapting to climate-related challenges, and enhancing environmental stewardship at all levels.

The event highlighted the collaborative nature of the policy development process, as participants emphasized the need for synergy among stakeholders to achieve tangible results.

Sokoto State’s proactive approach reflects a commitment to addressing the pressing challenges posed by climate change, with the ultimate goal of ensuring a more resilient and sustainable future for its people.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in integrating climate considerations into governance and policy frameworks, positioning Sokoto State as a model for climate action in Nigeria.
