The Senator representing Lagos West at the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly, Senator, Idiat Adebule, has distributed 1,132 bags of fertilizer to farmers in Lagos.
The fertilizers were distributed across 28 local government areas and local council development areas (LCDAs) in her district.
During the distribution ceremony, Senator Adebule explained that the gesture is part of a federal government initiative aimed at boosting agricultural output and easing economic challenges.
She said the fertilizer distribution is in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which promises to scale up activities in the agricultural sector.
The senator urged the beneficiaries to use the fertilizers effectively to maximize their benefits.
Speaking during the ceremony, Razaq Ajala, Secretary-General of the Conference of 57 Local Governments and LCDAs, and Chairman of Odi-Olowo/Ojuwoye LCDA, praised the federal government’s decision to support farmers nationwide, stating it would help increase harvests and stabilize food prices.
Vice Chairman of the Lagos chapter of the All Farmers’ Association of Nigeria (AFAN), Shakiru Agbayewa, noted the financial strain on farmers, with the cost of fertilizers currently between N40,000 to N50,000, and applauded the government’s intervention.
“The federal government, in its wisdom, has decided to donate fertilizers to ease the burden on farmers and enhance food production,” Agbayewa said, promising to put the fertilizers to good use.
Farmers who benefited from the distribution, including Oluwatoyin Olufuwa and Badagry Farmers’ Coordinator, Augustine Onu, expressed their gratitude, describing the initiative as unprecedented and a significant boost to food security.
